Hôm nay chúng ta sẽ học tiếp bài số 17 trong loạt bài học 25 Bài thành ngữ tiếng Anh giao tiếp hàng ngày 2019.
Các cụm từ này đều là những cụm từ cực kỳ phổ biến trong cuộc trò chuyện hàng ngày ở The United States of American (USA) hoặc United Kingdom (UK). Mọi người sẽ nghe thấy chúng trong các bộ phim và chương trình TV và có thể sử dụng chúng để làm cho tiếng Anh của mình giống với tiếng của người bản ngữ hơn.

Lesson 17: Carol tells Bob the good news
Carol phones Bob to tell him the cookies are selling very well and that she needs another 1,000 by the morning. Bob isn’t sure he can make the cookies so quickly, but Carol insists
Carol: Bob, your wife’s cookies are selling like hotcakes!
Bob: How many did you sell, Carol?
Carol: We’ve sold out. I need more right away! Bring me another 1,000 by tomorrow at 9 a.m.
Bob: That’s a tall order, Carol.
Carol: Don’t blow it, Bob! Susan’s Scrumptious Cookies could really take off.
Bob: I know, but I’m not sure we have enough time to bake all those cookies.
Carol: Bake all night if you have to. Burn the midnight oil! If you work hard now, you’ll be sitting pretty in a few years
Bob: Rest assured that I’ll do my best to deliver the goods.
Carol: Okay, now let’s stop the chitchat. You’ve got work to do!

Ý nghĩa các thành ngữ tiếng Anh giao tiếp hàng ngày trong bài
1. Câu thành ngữ số 1: (to) blow it
– Nghĩa tiếng Anh: (to) blow it – to spoil an opportunity
– Nghĩa tiếng Việt: đừng làm hỏng, đừng vuột mất cơ hội
Ví dụ 1: The actress got nervous and forgot all of her lines. She really blew it!
Ví dụ 2: I’ll give you one more chance, but don’t blow it this time!
Từ đồng nghĩa: to screw up [slang].
Ví dụ: I can’t believe you screwed up during the interview by asking for six weeks of vacation before you even got the job offer!
2. Câu thành ngữ số 2: (to) burn the midnight oil
– Nghĩa tiếng Anh: to stay up late studying or working
– Nghĩa tiếng Việt: dành cả đêm để học hoặc làm việc.
Ví dụ l: Michael burned the midnight oil studying for his algebra test.
Ví dụ 2: The project is due tomorrow and we’re far from finished. We’re going to have to burn the midnight oil tonight.

– Nghĩa tiếng Việt: tán dóc,trò chuyện
Ví dụ 1: Peter told Heather to stop the chitchat and get back to work.
Ví dụ 2: Okay, enough chitchat! Let’s start discussing this week’s reading assignment.
Từ đồng nghĩa shoot the breeze.
Chú ý: ” Chitchat” còn có thể làm động từ
Ví dụ: Amber and Ted were chitchatting all night long.
4. Câu thành ngữ số 4: (to) deliver the goods
– Nghĩa tiếng Anh: to meet expectations; to do what’s required
– Nghĩa tiếng Việt: đạt chỉ tiêu
Ví dụ l: Peter thought Bob wasn’t delivering the goods, so he fired him.
Ví dụ 2: I’m depending on you to finish the job on time. I know that you can deliver the goods!
Từ đồng nghĩa: to cut the mustard.
Ví dụ: If you can’t cut the mustard here, you’ll have to find a new job.
5. Câu thành ngữ số 5: (to) do one’s best
– Nghĩa tiếng Anh: to try as hard as possible
– Nghĩa tiếng Việt: cố hết sức có thể
Ví dụ 1: Although Ted did his best, he still failed his chemistry test.
Ví dụ 2: You might not get a perfect score on your history test, but just do your best.

6. Câu thành ngữ số 6: rest assured

– Nghĩa tiếng Việt: chắc chắn

Ví dụ 1: When Meg realized her house was on fire, she called the fire department right away.
Ví dụ 2: You need some sugar for your cookies? I’ll bring some over right away.
8. Câu thành ngữ số 8: (to) sell like hotcakes
– Nghĩa tiếng Anh: to sell fast; to be a popular item.
– Nghĩa tiếng Việt: hàng bán chạy
Ví dụ 1: Those new Fubu blue jeans are selling like hotcakes. All the girls love them.
Ví dụ 2: Stephen King’s new novel is selling like hotcakes.
9. Câu thành ngữ số 9: (to be) sitting pretty
– Nghĩa tiếng Anh: in a good position (often financially)
– Nghĩa tiếng Việt: có chỗ đứng (thuộc nghĩa tài chính)
Ví dụ 1: After Chad won the lottery, he was really sitting pretty. He quit his job and bought a mansion in Malibu, California.
Ví dụ 2: Gina was one of the first people to work at Amazon.com, and she made millions on her stock options. Now she’s sitting pretty.
10. Câu thành ngữ số 10: sold out
– Nghĩa tiếng Anh: completely sold
– Nghĩa tiếng Việt: hết hàng
Ví dụ 1: Becky was really disappointed when she found out that the Britney Spears concert was sold out.
Ví dụ 2: Susan’s cookies were very popular at the bake sale. In fact, they sold out in just 20 minutes!
11. Câu thành ngữ số 11: (to) take off
– Nghĩa tiếng Anh: to become popular; to grow suddenly
– Nghĩa Việt: nổi tiếng
Ví dụ 1: Julia Roberts’ career took off with the film “Pretty Woman.”
Chú ý: “Take off” còn mang nhiều nghiã khác
1. Cởi ra, lấy ra.
Ví dụ: Please take off your shoes before coming inside our apart- ment. We just vacuumed this morning.
2. Rời đi.
Ví dụ: We’re taking off now. See you later!
3. Khấu trừ.
Ví dụ: The waiter forgot to bring us drinks, so he took $10 off the bill.
4. Cất cách.
Ví dụ: The airplane took off on time.
12. Câu thành ngữ số 12: tall order
– Nghĩa tiếng Anh: a task or goal that is difficult to achieve
– Nghĩa tiếng Việt: một đòi hỏi khá cao
Ví dụ 1: It’ll be a tall order to find a new governor as popular as the current one.
Ví dụ 2: You want me to figure out how to clone your pet rabbit? That’s a tall order!
